If you ever find yourself driving through northern Iowa thinking, “There’s no way we’re about to have one of the best meals of the year out here…” — let me introduce you to Cafe Mir in Fertile.
Because this place? It’s something special.
Small Town, Big Flavor
Café Mir started back in 2017 when cousins Josh and Nathaniel Frederick came back to their hometown with a big idea: bring creative, bold, farm-driven food to rural Iowa.
What started as a passion project has grown into a full-on destination restaurant — and now it’s a true family operation with Josh running the kitchen alongside his sisters.
And you can feel that family energy when you’re there. It’s welcoming, relaxed, and unpretentious — but the food? The food is next level.

They Do Things a Little Differently
One of the coolest things about Café Mir is that they don’t follow the typical restaurant schedule.
In the winter, they’re open for:
- Taco Tuesdays
- Saturday night dinners
That’s it.

And somehow that makes it even better. It feels intentional. Like when they’re open, they’re all in. People plan for it. You don’t just “swing by” — you make a night of it.
And because they focus on fresh, local ingredients, the menu is always changing. It’s true farm-to-table dining, but with an eclectic twist.
Mediterranean influence, bold flavors, wood-fired everything — and dishes that surprise you in the best way.
What’s on the menu one week might not be there the next. Which honestly just gives you a reason to go back.

What We Ordered (And Loved)
We showed up hungry and ready to try a little bit of everything.
Focaccia Bread
Warm, soft, a little crispy around the edges, perfectly salted. The kind of bread where you keep tearing off “just one more piece” until suddenly it’s gone.

Brussels Sprouts Caesar Salad
If you think Brussels sprouts aren’t your thing, this might change your mind. Great texture, bold Caesar flavor, and just enough crunch. It felt familiar but still creative.

Potato Latkes
Golden, crispy, comforting — basically everything you want in a latke. These disappeared fast.

Wood-Fired Prawns
These were absolutely incredible.
Sashimi grade U12 prawns, cooked over wood fire and finished with kimchee-lemon garlic butter, fresh parsley, and a squeeze of lemon. The flavor combination was unreal — smoky from the fire, bright from the lemon, rich from the butter, and just a little kick from the kimchee.
They were juicy, tender, and packed with flavor without feeling heavy. Definitely one of those dishes where you slow down and really appreciate every bite.

Straight From the Skewer
Completely different vibe — and just as good.
This dish featured tenderized and grilled chicken thigh skewers, topped with biber salçası sauce, Moroccan yogurt, pickled red onions, and fresh mint. The chicken was juicy with a beautiful char, and the toppings brought so much flavor to the table.
You had smoky, tangy, creamy, and fresh all happening at once — and somehow it all balanced perfectly. It felt bold and a little unexpected in the best way.

And yes… we absolutely saved room for dessert.
Dessert Was 100% the Right Decision
Butterscotch Pot de Crème
Smooth, creamy, rich without being overly sweet. The kind of dessert you slow down for.

Flourless Chocolate Torte
Dense, fudgy, and full of deep chocolate flavor. If you’re a chocolate person, this one’s calling your name.

Why Café Mir Is Worth the Drive
There’s something really fun about finding food like this in a tiny Iowa town. It feels unexpected. It feels personal. And it feels like the kind of place you tell your friends about and say, “Okay, trust me on this one.”
Café Mir isn’t trying to be flashy. It’s just really good food, made with local ingredients, cooked over fire, served in a cozy space by people who care.
If you’re up for a little road trip and a memorable meal, put Café Mir on your list.
Just check the schedule first.
And don’t skip dessert.
