The hotel also has a restaurant space on-site, and it’s gone through a bit of a change recently. When we stayed here, it was still home to The Markley & Blythe, which ended up closing in 2025. The restaurant has since been replaced by what is now Leadlight. We’re really glad we got to eat there when it was still Markley & Blythe, because the meal was honestly a highlight of the stay. We ordered the lamb chops, shared a charcuterie board, and everything was so well done. But the real standout? Dessert. We had an amazing cherry cobbler topped with vanilla ice cream, and it was the perfect cozy ending to dinner. The Historic Park Inn Mason City

The Historic Park Inn Hotel in Mason City, Iowa

If you’re ever looking for a hotel stay that feels like more than just a place to sleep, the Historic Park Inn in downtown Mason City is such a fun and unique option.

Whenever we travel, we always try to find cool, memorable places to stay if we can — something with character instead of the usual chain hotel. It’s not always possible, but when we have the option, we love picking a spot that feels like part of the trip itself. And this hotel definitely fits that.

In fact, it’s the last remaining hotel in the world designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, which honestly makes it feel like a destination all on its own.

A Hotel with a Seriously Cool Story

The Park Inn originally opened back in 1910, and you can really feel that history when you walk inside. The building is a beautiful example of Wright’s Prairie School style — lots of warm tones, geometric details, and that classic architectural charm.

Over the years, the hotel went through some rough patches, but thankfully it was restored and reopened in 2011. Now it’s been brought back to life in a way that still honors the original design, while adding all the modern comforts you’d want for a weekend getaway.

Cozy Boutique Rooms with Tons of Character

One of the things we loved most is that the hotel feels very boutique — there are only 27 rooms, and they all have their own personality. No cookie-cutter layouts here.

The rooms blend historic charm with updated touches, so you get that classic vibe without feeling like you’re staying in a museum. It’s cozy, comfortable, and just a really memorable place to spend the night.

After dinner, we also spent some time relaxing in The Draftsman Lounge, which is tucked away down in the lower level of the hotel. It has this cozy, dimly lit atmosphere that honestly gives off almost speakeasy vibes, making it such a fun spot to wind down.

We grabbed a Pseudo Sue — a local favorite from Toppling Goliath Brewing in Decorah — and it was the perfect way to end the evening.

Even beyond the food, it’s just nice having a great spot right inside the hotel where you can unwind after exploring downtown Mason City. And honestly, the next time we’re passing through Iowa, we definitely want to come back and check out Leadlight to see what the new restaurant is like.

The Perfect Downtown Location

Another big bonus is the location. The Park Inn is right in the heart of downtown Mason City, just steps from Central Park, so it’s super easy to walk around and explore.

You can check out local shops, restaurants, and nearby attractions without needing to drive everywhere, which always makes a trip feel more relaxed.

Why It’s Worth Staying Here

Honestly, staying at the Historic Park Inn is one of those experiences that feels special from the moment you arrive. It’s exactly the kind of place we love finding — not just somewhere to crash for the night, but somewhere that adds something extra to the trip.

Whether you’re into architecture, history, or just love staying somewhere a little different, it’s absolutely worth adding to your Iowa travel list.

It’s not just a hotel — it’s a little step back in time, right in the middle of Mason City.
