When the Midwest summer heat kicks in, a good waterpark day is hard to beat—and Lost Island Waterpark in Waterloo is one of those places that’s just plain fun for the whole family.
The whole park has a tropical island theme, so it almost feels like you’ve stepped into a mini vacation instead of being in Iowa. There are palm trees, waterfalls, island music playing around the park, and a ton of rides and pools to keep everyone busy all day.
The funny thing about our family, though, is that we’re kind of split when it comes to waterparks. Some of us are all about the big slides, while others (me) are perfectly happy just floating around all afternoon.
The Lazy River Is Always My First Stop
I’ve always loved a good lazy river, and Lost Island has a great one. It’s the kind where you grab a tube, hop in, and just drift along while the water carries you around the park.
There’s something about floating along, going under little bridges and past waterfalls, that just feels like the perfect way to spend a hot summer day. Honestly, I could probably spend half the day just circling that river.
Meanwhile, the rest of the family is usually off climbing stairs to the next big slide.
The Slide That Almost Scared Me Off
One ride I wasn’t so sure about at first was the Molokini Crater.
If you haven’t seen it, it’s one of those big funnel slides where you ride in a raft and shoot out into this huge cone-shaped bowl before dropping out the bottom.
Standing down below and looking up at it, it honestly looked a little intimidating.
And the climb to the top didn’t help either. The higher we got, the more I started thinking, “Why did I agree to this?”
But once we pushed off and started the ride, it was actually a blast.
You swing way up the sides of the funnel, then back down again, and it ends up being way more fun than scary. By the time we splashed out at the bottom, I was laughing and thinking, “Okay… that was actually awesome.”
I’m really glad I did it, because it ended up being one of the most memorable parts of the day.
There’s More Than Just the Waterpark
One thing that makes this place even better is that the fun doesn’t stop with the waterpark.
Right next door is the Lost Island Themepark, which has roller coasters, rides, and themed areas that make it feel like a full amusement park experience. If you’re planning a trip, it’s definitely something worth adding to the day or coming back for.
There’s also Lost Island Mini Golf and Lost Island Go‑Karts, which are fun if you want to keep the adventure going after you’ve dried off from the water rides.
Racing around the track or playing a round of mini golf is a pretty great way to finish off a day of waterpark fun.
Something for Everyone
That’s really what we liked most about Lost Island. There’s a little bit of everything:
- Big thrill slides
- Tube and raft rides
- A wave pool
- Kid-friendly play areas
- A relaxing lazy river
- And even more fun nearby with the theme park, mini golf, and go-karts
Our days at waterparks usually end up the same way: the thrill seekers run off to hit as many slides as possible, while I float the lazy river a few times. Then we all meet back up and try something together.
And every once in a while, I get talked into something a little more adventurous… like Molokini Crater.
Honestly though, that’s part of what makes a place like Lost Island so fun.
Even if you’re more of a lazy river person, you might just surprise yourself and end up loving one of the big rides too.
