Visiting Devil’s Tower in Wyoming

If you’ve ever been driving through Wyoming and suddenly spotted something in the distance that looks like it belongs in a movie… chances are, it might’ve been Devil’s Tower.

We visited Devil’s Tower as part of a road trip, and honestly, it ended up being one of the most memorable stops. It’s one of those places that’s hard to explain until you see it in person — it just rises straight up out of the landscape like it doesn’t even make sense.

It’s iconic, a little mysterious, and totally worth pulling off the highway for.

First Impressions: It’s Even Bigger Than You Expect

Pictures really don’t do Devil’s Tower justice.

You’ll be driving along, and then all of a sudden it’s just there — this massive rock formation standing alone against the sky. It feels almost unreal, like someone dropped it in the middle of Wyoming on purpose.

The closer you get, the more impressive it becomes. It’s huge, dramatic, and kind of impossible to stop staring at.

A Little Background on Devil’s Tower

Devil’s Tower is actually the first national monument in the United States, designated all the way back in 1906.

It’s a sacred site for many Native American tribes and has a lot of cultural significance, which adds another layer to the experience. There’s also plenty of fascinating geology behind it — those unique vertical columns make it look so different from anything else around.

And yes… it’s also famous for being featured in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, so movie fans will definitely recognize it.

Walking the Tower Trail

One of the best parts about visiting is that it’s super easy to explore.

We did the Tower Trail, which is about a 1.3-mile loop that goes all the way around the base. It’s a pretty easy walk, and the views are incredible the entire way.

As you walk, you get to see the tower from different angles, and it somehow looks impressive from every single one.

Plus, it’s peaceful out there — lots of open space, prairie views, and fresh air.

Wildlife and Prairie Dogs Everywhere

One unexpected highlight? The prairie dogs!

There’s a prairie dog town near the visitor center, and they are everywhere. Just popping up, chirping at each other, running around like they own the place.

We also saw deer in the area, and it’s not uncommon to spot other wildlife too.

It really feels like a classic Wyoming landscape.

Watching Rock Climbers on the Tower

If you look closely, you might notice tiny little dots moving up the side of the rock.

Those are rock climbers.

Devil’s Tower is actually a major climbing destination, and it’s kind of wild watching people scale something that massive. It makes you feel small in the best way.

Even if you’re not into climbing, it’s fun just seeing how adventurous people are.

Stopping at the Devil’s Tower Trading Post

One thing we didn’t expect, but really enjoyed, was checking out the Devil’s Tower Trading Post.

It’s a classic little stop near the monument where you can browse souvenirs, grab a snack or drink, and just take in the fun roadside vibe. It feels like the kind of place you have to walk through on a road trip — even if it’s just to pick up a postcard or a small keepsake.

They’ve got everything from t-shirts and magnets to local gifts and travel essentials, and it’s a nice quick stop either before heading out on the trail or on your way back to the car.
